“Exceedingly Broad”

By Jamie Tisler

Read Psalm 119:89-96

Incredible truths about the Lord: His word stands, never changing; He is faithful throughout all generations; He spoke and creation came into being; and all things He creates are His servants.

Princes DiWhat drew me to pause and mediate was the last verse. “I have seen a limit to all perfection; Your commandment is exceedingly broad.” I first read this a few weeks before the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, and I thought of her in the first part of this verse. She had stunning beauty, a deep love for her sons, a royal position that brought fame, and a heart for those who suffered the life-threatening effects of HIV, so much so that the world took notice and begin to minister aid to those infected. Some would say her life was perfect; however, at the age of 36, her life came to a sudden and awful end.

When the psalmist wrote this Psalm, he was undergoing affliction at the hands of an enemy whose chief end was to destroy him. He further declared he could persevere through it because he found delight in God’s law; he did not forget God’s precepts, which he had learned; he called on the Lord to save him, knowing full well only the Lord could; and he continually thought upon the words of the Lord and His character, which he knew so well by what he learned from studying and personal experiences.

What do I need to do in response to this Psalm? God’s word must be my delight, knowing it will sustain me through all circumstances in life. Thus, I must saturate my mind and my heart in His word by reading, studying, meditating, and walking according to it.

Lord, thank you for the reminder of who you are in this Psalm. Help me to pursue Your word and draw on it for truth, instruction, and comfort in times of affliction. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

 Say Yes to God’s Word,

Jamie
